01 — Commissioning

Every commission begins with a private conversation. You may arrive with a clear idea of what you would like to create, or begin with a design from the Baresi & Caine Archive and allow it to evolve from there.

We take the time to understand what the watch should represent before discussing its design, materials and technical specification.

Yes. Every commission is created as a Pièce Unique.

Once a timepiece has been completed for its owner, that exact configuration will not be created again. A design from our Archive may inspire another commission, but the finished watch remains individual to the person for whom it was created.

Yes. The Archive contains original Baresi & Caine designs that may be used as the starting point for a private commission.

Rather than selecting a finished product, you are selecting a design language from which your own watch can develop.

Yes. A commission does not have to begin with an existing Baresi & Caine reference.

For clients wishing to create something entirely individual, we can develop the timepiece from its earliest concept through to the finished watch.

02 — The Timepiece

A Baresi & Caine commission is not limited to a predetermined selection of materials, colours or finishes.

You may begin with an existing design from the Archive and make it your own, or begin with nothing more than an idea and create an entirely new timepiece with us from the ground up.

Case architecture, movement, dial, materials, gemstones, complications, finishing and the smallest personal details can all become part of the conversation.

The limit is your imagination. Our role is to find a way to bring it to life.

Baresi & Caine works with precious metals, exceptional natural stones, gemstones and specialist materials selected according to the individual commission.

Our stone dials include marbles, onyx and other naturally occurring materials whose individual characteristics mean that no two pieces are visually identical.

Where technically possible, yes.

Part of the commissioning process can involve sourcing a particular stone, gemstone or material with significance to the owner. Its suitability must first be assessed for watchmaking, as not every material can withstand the tolerances required of a timepiece.

Yes. Some of the most meaningful details are those visible only to the owner.

Initials, dates, numbers, symbols, inscriptions and other references can be incorporated through engraving or, where appropriate, developed into elements of the watch itself.

The movement is selected according to the technical and creative requirements of each commission.

Depending upon the piece, this may range from an automatic mechanical calibre to more complicated expressions of watchmaking, including tourbillon movements.

The movement is considered part of the commission rather than independently of its design.

03 — The Commissioning Experience

There is no single production time for a Pièce Unique.

The timescale depends upon the complexity of the design, movement, materials, specialist components and finishing required.

We establish an anticipated timeframe once the direction of the commission has been agreed and keep the client informed as the watch progresses through the atelier.

Yes.

The relationship continues throughout the creation of the watch, with updates at significant stages of its development.

For us, the process of seeing an idea become a physical object is part of the experience of commissioning a Pièce Unique.

Yes. Clients may be invited to our manufacture in La Chaux-de-Fonds to experience the environment in which their timepiece is being created and understand the work behind it.

A private visit can be arranged as part of the commissioning experience.

Wherever possible, we prefer the final handover to feel as personal as the commission itself.

Rather than treating delivery simply as logistics, we arrange the presentation of the completed timepiece individually with its owner.

04 — Pricing & Payment

There is no universal price for a Pièce Unique.

The value of a commission is determined by its movement, materials, gemstones, complexity, development and the work required to create it.

Once we understand what you would like to create, we can provide a clear proposal for the commission.

Yes. A deposit is required before work begins, with the remaining balance arranged according to the terms of the individual commission.

Full details are provided privately before a commission is confirmed.

05 — Ownership & Care

Yes. Details of the warranty applicable to your individual timepiece are provided with the watch at delivery.

As with any fine mechanical timepiece, servicing requirements depend upon the movement, use and environment in which the watch is worn.

We provide guidance specific to your watch and can arrange inspection, regulation and servicing through the Baresi & Caine atelier.

Yes.

A Baresi & Caine remains known to the atelier after it leaves us. Should it require technical attention, refinishing or restoration in the future, we can assess the piece and determine the appropriate work.

Yes. Replacement straps and appropriate hardware can be arranged through the atelier according to the specification of your timepiece.

Contact the atelier directly.

You do not need to diagnose the problem or understand its technical cause. Tell us what you have noticed and we will advise you on the appropriate next step.
